Storm Eowyn Live: Thousands without power, fallen trees and travel issues

Roads have been blocked by downed trees and flipped vehicles, train services have been cancelled, and schools have been closed as strong gale-force winds wreak havoc across the North East due to Storm Eowyn.

A massive tree crashed onto the street in Percy Gardens, Whitley Bay, narrowly avoiding a row of homes.

Numerous homes and businesses throughout the region are experiencing power outages, and flights and ferry services have also been affected.

A spokesperson for Northern Powergrid said at 9.30am this morning that power had been restored to 636 homes. However, but thousands remain without across the North East.

The southbound lane of Redheugh Bridge, connecting Newcastle and Gateshead, is currently closed due to an overturned vehicle. Lane two of the northbound side is also shut down, say Northumbria Police. The bridge is closed to pedestrians. No injuries have been reported.

Fallen tree A1 latest

Due to a fallen tree, a segment of the A1 in Northumberland is currently closed. The affected area is located between Clifton and Tranwell, south of Morpeth. Northumbria Police has reported that no injuries have occurred.
