Emergency services warning to children playing on frozen lakes

In County Durham, police have received numerous calls over the weekend from concerned residents about youths endangering themselves by venturing onto thin ice.

Both Durham Constabulary and the County Durham and Darlington Fire and Rescue Service are stressing the importance of understanding the risks and knowing how to respond in an emergency, with similar concerns emerging in Cumbria.

Durham Constabulary has urged parents and guardians to communicate the fire service’s safety advice to their children.

A spokesperson for the fire service emphasized that ice is unlikely to freeze to a safe thickness for walking, cautioning everyone to “never” take the chance.

Earlier this week, firefighters responded to reports of young people attempting to break the ice on a lake in Darlington’s South Park.
