Emergency services have rushed to the scene of a standoff on a rooftop in Gateshead.
A significant police presence is established on Princesway North in Team Valley, with the road closed off to traffic.
It is believed two men were involved and one is believed to have come down.
A spokesperson for Northumbria Police said:
Shortly after 1pm today (Monday), we received a report of attempted burglary at an address on Milton Avenue in North Shields. Officers began investigating the report and at 2.30pm a vehicle of interest was sighted in the Team Valley area of Gateshead.
Two males are then reported to have climbed onto the external roof of a building in the area. Officers are currently in attendance at the scene to engage with those on the roof and bring the incident to a safe conclusion.
A cordon is in place and there is believed to be no wider risk to the public.
A spokesperson for North East Ambulance Service said:
We were called to an incident at a premises on Princesway, Team Valley, Gateshead at 2.44pm this afternoon by our colleagues at Northumbria Police. We dispatched a duty officer and one vehicle from our Hazardous Area Response Team and are currently on standby should we be needed.
