Two-day celebration of snowdrops in Byker

This month, Hadrian Square in Byker will bloom into a two-day winter awakening, celebrating the resilience and beauty of the first spring flowers—snowdrops.

The events are part of the Newcastle East – Inclusive, Healthy, Vibrant High Streets Project, led by Newcastle City Council and funded by the North East Combined Authority.

Snowdrops on the Square draws inspiration from delicate yet resilient blooms that push through the frost, bringing hope for the season ahead.

Everyone is welcome to step in to a cosy, snowdrop-inspired marquee where warmth, connection and creativity take centre stage.

The play installation created by local designer Lucy Minta Reeves shines a light on the growing textile waste crisis. Crafted using approximately 85% rescued, reused, recycled, and repurposed materials, it’s a celebration of creativity with a minimal environmental footprint.

Alongside the installation, Hadrian Square hosts a packed programme of music, live performances, movement workshops, and creative sessions for the whole community.

Cllr Dan Greenhough, Newcastle City Council Cabinet Member for Economy, Jobs and Skills, said:

“Following the success of last year’s programme which attracted nearly 3,000 visitors, we are delighted to welcome everyone back for more exciting events this half-term at Hadrian Square, Byker.

“These events offer a great opportunity to unite our communities, highlight important issues such as waste in this instance, and show residents the work that’s been going on to improve our cherished high streets.”

“Our High Streets Project has brought some fantastic improvements and events to the east of Newcastle and I look forward to this latest instalment”.

On Thursday 27th February, the event begins with Mamas and Babas, a movement class for mothers and their little ones (ages 0-4) led by Holly Irving.

Throughout the afternoon, families can enjoy open play in the installation, a space designed for exploration and creativity with Amy from Cherry & Bee.

As evening falls, Watersmeet, a local acoustic folk duo, will bring a soothing set featuring dance improvisation by Lila Naruse. The night closes with Crane House, a five-piece band delivering a blend of original alt-folk and dreamgaze music.

Friday (28th February) starts with a dedicated neurodiverse play session, offering a quieter and more relaxed environment for all ages. Later in the morning, Move and Groove, a fun-filled dance and movement class with Benedicta Valentina, welcomes young children and their families.

For those looking for a creative outlet, Writing Remedies, a workshop led by Bethan Kitchen, offers a chance to explore storytelling and self-expression.

The afternoon continues with open play in the installation before the evening programme begins. Bradley Creswick, an internationally acclaimed violinist, will take the stage accompanied by David Murray, with another stunning dance improvisation by Lila Naruse.

The festival concludes with the Ladies of Midnight Blue, a powerful Afro-Latin percussion and brass duo, bringing an uplifting and rhythmic energy to the square.

Hadrian Square events are part of the Newcastle East – Inclusive, Healthy, Vibrant High Streets Project, focussing on five high streets in the east of the city – Chillingham Road, Heaton Road, Heaton Park Road, Shields Road and Welbeck Road.

This programme of events was created in direct response to community feedback requesting more things to do in the in the area as well as helping to boost footfall on the high street.
