Two drivers arrested after two crashes on A19

Two individuals have been arrested following two accidents that occurred in the same vicinity of the A19 in County Durham.

Authorities suspect that the initial accident took place shortly before 5 am. on Sunday, 12 January, near Castle Eden, when an Audi collided with a lamppost.

Durham Constabulary officers responded to the incident. While they were on-site, a Toyota struck the parked police vehicle and another lamppost. The driver of the Audi sustained serious injuries and is currently receiving treatment at North Tees Hospital. There are no reports of other injuries.

Both drivers have been taken into custody on charges related to driving offenses. The southbound lane was closed for most of the day between the A181 at Wingate and Castle Eden and the A179 at Sheraton.

Authorities are seeking anyone who might have witnessed the incident or seen the Audi before the crash.
