90 year old man dies after being hit by vehicle

A 90-year-old man has passed away two weeks after being struck by a vehicle.

Peter Douglas was walking along High West Street in Gateshead, near the Regent Street junction, around 11:15 AM GMT on December 23 when he was hit by a black BMW 525d.

Mr. Douglas was transported to the hospital with life-threatening injuries but sadly passed away on Wednesday.

The driver of the BMW remained at the scene to aid law enforcement with their investigation, as confirmed by Northumbria Police.

An investigation is ongoing, and police are appealing for anyone with information to come forward.

In an appeal online, the force said:

‘Were you in the High West Street area of Gateshead at about 11.15pm on Monday, December 23? You could help as we investigate a collision following which an elderly man has sadly died.

We received a report that a black BMW 525d had been travelling westbound, near the Regent Street junction, when – for reasons yet to be established – it struck a pedestrian who was walking on the road.

Emergency services attended the scene where the pedestrian – Peter Douglas, 90, of Gateshead – had sustained life-threatening injuries. He was taken to hospital for treatment of his injuries and on Wednesday he sadly passed away.

The driver of the BMW remained at the scene to assist us with our enquiries.

We launched a full investigation and today are re-appealing to anyone with information contact us.’

Mr. Douglas’s next of kin are receiving support from police officers during this difficult time, the force stated.
