There is an amber weather warning for snow.

11am – Northern Trains are advising all passengers not to travel.
Beamish closed for the day
The museum said on its website that they had to shut for the day due to snow.
“We’re saddened to have to make this decision but the safety of our visitors, staff and volunteers must always come first, and due to the weather conditions it just wouldn’t be possible to open.
“For anyone with a booking for our pantomime performances today, we’ll be sending you an email with further information.
“Thank you everyone for your understanding.”
Travel
10:30am – Trains between Bishop Auckland and Darlington have been cancelled because of the snow, Northern has said.
9.00am – Highways North East said on X: Traffic is stopped on the A1M in County Durham southbound between J61 Bowburn and J60 Bishop Auckland due to stranded vehicles on the carriageway. Recovery is currently on scene, alongside National Highways Traffic Officers.
30 minutes across the Tyne and Wear Metro network, due to an early signal issue – check before you travel.
No Northern trains running eastbound around Southbank due to emergency engineering works.

Today, the Met Office say it will be cold with snow giving significant accumulations, especially over Pennines with the risk of blizzard conditions. Perhaps turning to rain on coasts. Windy, particularly along coastal districts. Maximum temperature 2 °C.
Tonight:
Cold with snowfall continuing overnight and adding to accumulations with the risk of blizzards on the Pennines. Snow becoming lighter in places towards dawn. Remaining windy, particularly along coastal areas. Minimum temperature 0 °C.
Monday:
Wind and rain or hill snow clearing by afternoon. Remaining cold with sunny spells and scattered wintry showers. Maximum temperature 2 °C.
Outlook for Tuesday to Thursday:
Tuesday, odd snow shower then drier with sunny spells. Wednesday, sunny but dry. Thursday, bright with scattered snow showers.
