Gateshead Council have issued further update after the closure of Gateshead Highway.

The A167 Gateshead Highway flyover is shut to all traffic after an inspection by consultant structural engineers which stated a potential risk to safety if it remains open, Gateshead Council have said.

In an earlier statement, the council said:

“The whole of the flyover is being closed this evening, Friday 13 December.

The road beneath the flyover will also be closed between the Park Lane roundabout (junction with A184 Felling bypass) and the Five Bridges roundabout (junction with B1426 Sunderland Road).

The two roundabouts below the flyover will remain open, after expert advice from the consultant engineers confirmed it was safe to do so, allowing traffic to continue east/west and access between the A184 Felling bypass and the Tyne Bridge, and to the A1 regionwide.

The council is working with neighbouring local authorities to manage traffic as efficiently as we can, and signpost drivers to alternative routes, or to use public transport where possible.’

On Sunday, the Council shared an update:

A spokesperson said:

‘We’re continuing to work with our partners to manage traffic as efficiently as possible while the flyover and part of the road beneath it remain closed.

The Park Lane roundabout (junction of A167 and A184) will also be closed from 7pm tonight (Sunday 15 December) until 6am tomorrow (Monday 16 December) as part of our maintenance checks.

The Five Bridges roundabout at the junction of the A167 and B1426 Sunderland Road will be closed from 10pm tomorrow until 6am Tuesday (17 December).

Please avoid travelling at peak times if you can, allow extra time for journeys and use alternative routes and public transport where possible.

Working from home if you’re able to will also help minimise disruption.

The One Network map on our website shows the diversions in place. Plan your journey: www.gateshead.gov.uk/roadworks

Thank you for your patience and understanding.’
