Reports say “Drivers are currently taking it in turns to go in either direction. Take care when driving.”
Northumbrian Water are believed to be in attendance to monitor the situation and find out where the spillage is coming from.
A spokesperson from Northumbrian Water said: “We have attended and this is river water from the Tyne, as it is in flood at present there is a flap which opens up and caused water to overflow onto the road.
This has been reported to Gateshead Council who will be attending to this.”
