A public consultation has begun on plans of a new development of affordable homes at Pottery Bank, in Walker, Newcastle, say Newcastle City Council.

As part of the broader Walker Riverside strategic housing regeneration initiative, the development at Pottery Bank will provide a range of 42 affordable homes available for rent and Shared Ownership.

After conducting an open procurement process, Keepmoat has been chosen as the preferred contractor. They will construct a variety of new homes, including two, three, and four-bedroom houses, along with one and two-bedroom bungalows.

The development aims to create a high-quality, landscape-oriented community featuring diverse housing options to accommodate different residents’ needs. Additionally, new pedestrian and cycling paths will be integrated throughout the area to enhance connectivity, alongside communal green spaces.

Councillor Paula Maines, Cabinet Member for Housing, stated: “We are thrilled to have appointed Keepmoat as the preferred contractor for the Pottery Bank development. Our goal is to ensure the new homes effectively meet the needs of our community, and the upcoming consultation event offers residents the chance to contribute to the planning process. We are genuinely excited about these proposals and the opportunity to transform the area.

“As a Council, we will continue to invest in our homes, services, and communities to create wonderful places for people to take pride in living.”

Keepmoat intends to share their preliminary plans with local residents and businesses before submitting a planning application to Newcastle City Council later this year, with construction expected to commence in Spring 2025.

Ian Worgan, Regional Managing Director at Keepmoat North East, remarked: “We are honored to be selected as the preferred housebuilder for the regeneration of the Pottery Bank area in Walker, further strengthening our successful collaboration with Newcastle City Council.

“We look forward to presenting our proposed plans for the new homes at the upcoming public consultation event and are dedicated to fostering a vibrant new community.”

The public consultation event is scheduled for Wednesday, November 27, from 3:00 PM to 7:00 PM at Pottery Bank Community Centre in Walker. This event will provide an opportunity for attendees to view the plans and share their feedback before the details are finalized for the planning submission.
